Moroccan Police Foil Attempt to Smuggle More Than 14,000 Psychotropic Pills Through Tanger Med Port

Moroccan National Police officers stationed at Tanger Med Port successfully thwarted an international drug smuggling attempt on Tuesday evening, seizing 14,245 psychotropic pharmaceutical tablets intended for illegal entry into the country.

The seizure was made during a thorough inspection of a Moroccan-registered international freight truck shortly after it arrived aboard a ferry from a Spanish port. Assisted by specially trained police detection dogs, officers uncovered the concealed shipment hidden within the vehicle’s structural framework.

Authorities recovered 11,145 tablets of “RIVOTRIL” and 3,100 tablets of “TRANKIMASINE”, both classified as controlled psychotropic medications.

The truck driver, a Moroccan national, was arrested and placed in police custody under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. The ongoing investigation aims to identify all individuals connected to the smuggling operation and uncover any domestic or international criminal networks involved.

The operation forms part of Morocco’s continued efforts to combat international drug trafficking, curb the illicit trade in psychotropic substances, and strengthen the fight against transnational organized crime.
