Authorities Continue Urban Redevelopment in M’hamid: Informal Housing Demolished for New Road Project in Marrakech

Local authorities carried out a large-scale demolition operation on Tuesday morning targeting a number of informal housing structures in the Debou Hssine area of Old M’hamid, Marrakech. The initiative forms part of an urban development project aimed at creating a new roadway at the intersection of Palm Avenue.
Strong Field Mobilization
The operation was conducted under heightened security and administrative supervision. The Pasha of M’hamid and the head of the local administrative district oversaw the process, with the participation of national police, auxiliary forces, and civil protection units.
A range of logistical and organizational measures were implemented to ensure the smooth execution of the demolition works and to assist families affected by the relocation program.
Urban Development and Infrastructure Improvement
The demolition campaign is part of a broader urban restructuring plan designed to upgrade infrastructure and address long-standing urban planning challenges within the area.
The new road project is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance connectivity between different neighborhoods of M’hamid, and support the rapid urban growth experienced by Marrakech in recent years.
Mixed Reactions Among Residents
The operation generated considerable discussion among local residents. While some consider it a necessary step toward combating substandard housing and improving the urban landscape, others expressed concerns regarding the social impact on affected families.
Authorities maintain that the initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to eliminate unsafe and unauthorized housing while creating favorable conditions for the implementation of future development projects across Marrakech.
