Tinmel: The Cradle of the Almohad Movement and a Symbol of Heritage Resilience

As part of the closing events of Marrakech Heritage Days, El Badi Palace hosted two cultural and heritage exhibitions under the theme “Landmarks and Sites of the Spiritual Heritage of Marrakech and its Surrounding Regions.”

The initiative aims to showcase Morocco’s rich cultural heritage, highlighting its historical, architectural, and civilizational significance.

One of the exhibitions is dedicated to the Tinmel Mosque in Al Haouz Province, a landmark closely associated with the emergence of the Almohad movement in the 12th century. It explores the site’s religious, scholarly, and political importance and its central role in Moroccan history.

The exhibition also sheds light on the damage caused by the Al Haouz earthquake and presents ongoing efforts to restore, preserve, and safeguard this invaluable cultural treasure for future generations.

Koutoubia Mosque: An Architectural Masterpiece in the Heart of Marrakech

The second exhibition focuses on the Koutoubia Mosque, one of Morocco’s most iconic historical monuments, built by the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu’min.

Through a rich collection of visual and historical materials, the exhibition highlights the artistic and engineering features that made its renowned minaret a landmark of Islamic architecture and a source of inspiration for numerous monuments across Morocco and beyond.

Promoting Heritage Awareness Among Future Generations

The exhibitions seek to strengthen public awareness of the importance of national heritage, introduce visitors to the distinctive features of Almohad architecture, and connect younger generations with Morocco’s rich historical legacy.

They also aim to encourage academic and cultural research in the field of architectural heritage.

Rare Historical Documents and Interactive Digital Experiences

Visitors can explore a diverse collection of photographs, rare historical archives, Almohad artifacts, architectural plans and maps, as well as audiovisual and documentary presentations.

The exhibitions also feature explanatory panels in Arabic, French, and English, alongside an interactive digital space dedicated to presenting the history and achievements of the Almohad dynasty.
